Definition and Existence of Halogens
Halogens mainly refer to the Group ⅦA elements in the periodic table, including fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At). Since astatine (At) is an artificially synthesized radioactive element that hardly exists in nature, halogens usually refer to the first four elements.
Common Forms of Halogens
- Fluorine and its compounds: Fluorine gas, hydrogen fluoride, sodium fluoride, chlorofluorocarbons, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc.
- Chlorine and its compounds: Chlorine gas, hydrochloric acid, chloroform, chlorinated paraffin, chlorofluorocarbons, polychlorinated naphthalenes, chlorinated alkanes, polyvinyl chloride, etc.
- Bromine and its compounds: Bromine water, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), tetrabromobisphenol A, brominated resins, etc.
- Iodine and its compounds: Iodine, hydrogen iodide, sodium iodide, potassium iodide, silver iodide, etc.
Testing Methods
- ion chromatography (most accurate testing method)
- XRF rapid scanning (semi-quantitative testing)
